Submission: Cyclist Struck at Pennsylvania, 25th, and Lst, NW

Date: 1/14/11
Approx time: 8PM
A cyclist traveling northwest on Pennsylvania Ave entered the intersection while the light was green. Due to falling snow and icy road conditions, the cyclist proceeded across the intersection slowly and cautiously, during which time the light turned from green to yellow to red. A George Washington University 4-Ride van, waiting to turn left onto 25th Street from the opposite side of Pennsylvania Ave, received a green light and proceeded to turn before traffic had cleared from the intersection. The GWU van’s front end (passenger side) struck the cyclist’s front wheel. The cyclist was knocked to the ground and sustained minor injuries to the chin and legs. Both the van and bicycle were damaged, though only the bicycle was subsequently inoperable.
